Online Course FAQs

Frequently asked questions about our online courses

Our online courses are easier than ever to use, but here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about them. Read on!

What's the difference between an online class and an onsite class?

A lot of things are the same: We use the same instructors. They teach the same material. The students go through the same application process, and they come from the same pool of media-savvy folks who visit our site and take our other classes.

Some things are different: Since you don't have to show up to a specific place at a specific time, an online class is extremely flexible. Since you can post to the bulletin board any time, the class discussion continues all week. Since there is a transcript of the weekly group chats, you can access the text almost immediately if you can't make a chat. No matter how busy or unpredictable your schedule is, you'll never miss a class.

How does the online classroom work?

The online classroom is a website with several interactive components that make your learning experience as close to being in one of our onsite classes as possible.

  • Your instructor's lectures are posted once a week: you can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience. Supplemental material—readings, examples, or handouts—is also available.
  • Students post completed assignments on the course bulletin board, where the class gives feedback. You can ask questions, share resources, and support each other, creating a conversation that continues all week.
  • A regular group chat time allows your class to talk together via instant message. Transcripts are available when you can't attend, or if you want to review the material.
Why should I take an online class with mediabistro.com?

For the same reasons you use our site, or attend our events, or take our live classes! You'll be learning from the best professionals out there, and interacting with classmates who are here because they're passionate about their work and their world. In the bulletin board and the chat room, you have every opportunity to connect to your classmates and, through them, to their communities.

How do I get feedback on my work? Will I be workshopping my classmates' work too?

Each week you will get a new assignment, and you will post your completed work on the course bulletin board. Your instructor and your classmates will read and respond to your work. You can return to the bulletin board as often as you like to post your own comments, and get class updates. In turn, you also will read your fellow students' work and post comments. We encourage you to read the instructor's comments on all of your classmates' work, since that will help you develop a critical eye. Reading and commenting on each other's work is critical to your success. If you don't read and comment on your classmates' work, you really won't get as much out of the class.

If I miss the weekly chat, how can I find out what I missed?

You can read a transcript of all chat room discussions by viewing the chat room transcript.

What happens if I don't get my work in by the deadline?

It's up to your instructors. If it's late, they are not required to read it, and neither are your classmates. Respect for your instructors and fellow students is very important in our classes. If you're going to have a late assignment for one reason or another, let your instructor know immediately and see what you can work out.

Do I have to apply to get into an online class?

Yes. You must still apply and await acceptance for any class. You can get to the application form by following the link on each class description page.

Do I need any special equipment to take an online class?

The online classroom works with every common modern operating system.
